Pixels, KB, DPI and PPI Explained for Photo Resize and Printing
“Make the photo 20KB”, “resize it to 300×400 pixels” and “print at 300 DPI” describe different requirements. Knowing the difference prevents incorrect resizing.
What are pixels?
Pixels describe the digital width and height of an image. For example, 300×400 pixels means 300 pixels wide and 400 pixels high. This matters when a portal specifies exact dimensions.
What do KB and MB mean?
KB and MB describe file size. Two images can have the same pixel dimensions but different file sizes because of compression, format and image detail. Reducing pixels and reducing KB are not exactly the same task.
When do DPI and PPI matter?
PPI is commonly used for digital pixel density and DPI for printing. Online forms usually care more about pixels, file size and format. Physical printing also depends on the intended inch/cm size and source resolution.
A practical example
A 4×6 inch photo print benefits from a higher-resolution source. An online form may instead require a separate copy at 200×230 pixels and a small file size. Keep different outputs for different jobs.

Does reducing KB automatically reduce pixels?
Not always. You can keep the same dimensions and increase compression, or reduce dimensions which may also reduce file size.
Do I need to change DPI for an online form?
Unless the portal explicitly specifies DPI, pixels, file size and format are usually the important checks.
Why are more pixels useful for printing?
A larger physical print can look sharper when the source contains more genuine detail, provided the original image itself is clear.
