A4 vs 4×6 Printing: Size Guide for Photos, ID Cards and Layouts
A layout can look correct on screen but print at the wrong physical size when “Fit to page” or automatic scaling is enabled. Understanding A4 and 4×6 media helps you print more accurately.
What are A4 and 4×6 sizes?
A4 is a document paper format (about 210 × 297 mm), while 4×6 is a common photo size (4 × 6 inches). Their aspect ratios and printable areas differ, so moving the same layout between them can change scaling.
Print scale is the critical setting
For exact-size cards or photos, check the scale in the print dialog. “Fit”, “Shrink to printable area” or browser scaling can alter physical dimensions. If your tool produced an exact-size output, 100% / Actual Size is a sensible starting point, followed by a test print.
When is a 4×6 photo sheet useful?
4×6 paper is efficient for passport photos, compact ID-card layouts and small customer print jobs. Arranging multiple copies with cut marks can simplify trimming.
When is A4 useful?
A4 is convenient for larger photo sheets, certificates, multiple documents and batch printing. It can hold more copies, but exact physical size still depends on correct layout dimensions and print scaling.
